This would seem to be self explanatory, but sometimes the simple answer slips by us. The simple explanation may seem to easy, and to obvious, but, it is usually right. The bug, weed, and rodent pests invading our space are there for a reason. Like humans, these pests need food, water, and shelter to survive, remove these, and the pests go away.
We are worried about the effects of pesticides on our health and our environment! We are concerned with the billions of dollars of insect and weed damage in the United States annually. We have developed a burgeoning "natural" and "organic" pesticide industry. The cost of the damage, plus the cost of commercial pesticides, plus the cost of the natural and organic products could support a country, or better yet, could be spent on other needs.
If we put forth one tenth the intellectual and economic resources on preventing pests that we spend on exterminating pests, we would need very few products to control them. I have used the house fire and forest fire analogies before for illustrating this, asking whether it was better to: "Control them or prevent them?" The forest fire angle is the more appropriate of the two. The control of brush in the understory would go a long way toward preventing large scale fires. It would also go a long way in preventing the pest infestation problems we are faced with.
Well, that is where it should begin, Brush Control As Prevention. Removing it is the place to start.
